Who We Are

Sotheby’s Wine is both a retail wine merchant and auctioneer, with a store in the lobby of Sotheby’s headquarters building in New York, at 72nd and York.

Sotheby’s Wine, which was formerly known as Aulden Cellars, is a wholly owned subsidiary of Sotheby’s Inc. In May 2009, we combined our retail and auction wine businesses under the “Sotheby’s Wine” name and now offer a full range of buying and selling services across both channels.

With the launch of our retail website, we will be able to offer wine buyers a wider range of wines, available for more immediate delivery (and consumption), in addition to our regular auctions.



Who We Are

In our new retail business, we apply the same exacting standards that we have used in our traditional auction business, with a focus on sourcing excellent wines, in pristine condition and from impeccable sources.

However, we can now sell them directly to you, at a fixed price, in whatever quantity you would like and for immediate delivery.

Whether you are buying a small number of bottles for a party, a bottle as a gift, buying wines for investment or building a great wine collection, we will be delighted to help and advise you at both retail and auction.

   


We select every wine based on how it tastes, whether it is of high quality for the price, thereby offering good value for money, and is representative of the region from where it comes. Our preferences are reflected in our range and our favorite Chateaux, Domaines or Wineries are frequently featured. We regularly visit different wine regions all over the world, spend time with owners and winemakers, many of whom have become friends. While we focus a lot of attention on buying wines from the best producers, we also spend time looking for great value wines that are not available in the US and have many wines from Bordeaux and Champagne that are exclusive to us.

Who We Are

Eli Rodriguez
Sales Director
Eli was born in Brooklyn and spent his formative years in Long Island. He got the wine bug at Cornell, graduating in 2001, and learnt the wine business, first at Best Cellars, then as a sommelier at Restaurant Daniel, working for one of the greatest chefs and most professional restaurateurs, Daniel Boulud, before joining Sotheby’s Wine in 2006. Eli keeps a close watch on the food, wine and music scene in New York. His first loves, apart from his wife and kids, Dahlia and Emile, are the wines from St Julien, Piedmont, Veneto and Mosel Rieslings, as well as anything from Spain - naturally, he is fluent in Spanish. Sadly, for him, Eli is a Mets fan.

Nicholas Jackson, Ph.D.
Wine Buyer
Nicholas grew up in the English countryside and received his Ph.D. from the University of Cambridge.  Whilst at Cambridge he encountered fine wine for the first time, and immediately immersed himself in the many wine activities available at the university.  He learned most about wine as a member of the University Blind Wine Tasting team, for their annual varsity match against Oxford (Cambridge won that year) and subsequently in international blind tasting competitions in France.  After graduating, he worked for a year at Sotheby's Wine in London, as an auction specialist, before moving to New York.  Nicholas is an unapologetic Francophile, and while steeped in Bordeaux, he loves the wines of Burgundy and Champagne, but also has a weakness for Spanish wines – everything from dry sherry to Ribera del Duero.

Charles Zafonte
Web and Marketing Coordinator
Charles joined the Sotheby’s Wine team in 2011. He is a New Jersey native and attended Rutgers University - he is an advocate for all that you don’t learn about New Jersey on The Jersey Shore or Sopranos  - he hikes, goes rock climbing, plays tennis, and won’t miss the annual Shad Festival (we had to look it up as we had no idea what he was talking about – www.shadfest.com). When forced to leave his home state, he spends time outdoors in Vermont. He is the first member of our group to openly admit that Oregon wines are one of his favorites, but his fondness for Burgundy is what keeps him employed. Charles recently completed the American Sommelier Association course.

Sacha Austin
Retail Director
Sacha Cabral joined Sotheby’s in 2016 as Retail Director for Sotheby’s Wine and currently leads the wine retail business in New York. Sacha gained her experience in wine retail as a Director and General Manager for a multi-unit wine retail company prior to joining Sotheby’s. In 2015, Sacha completed the Wine & Spirit Education Trust Level 2 with merit. She is also an active Toastmaster with tremendous experience in team leadership and change management. Originally from Barbados, Sacha graduated from the University of Miami with a major in International Finance and Marketing and a minor in Spanish.

Jamie Ritchie
CEO
Jamie comes from that small island across the pond, England. His claret obsession has kept him at Sotheby’s since first starting in London in 1990 (for those of you keeping track, that is 25 years, or 48% of his life!). He launched the first wine auction in New York in 1994, and loved the US so much he moved here permanently. Today, he serves as both SVP of the auction business and CEO of the retail business. The easiest way to find him these days is on a plane, traveling the world for Sotheby’s Wine - attending tastings and client dinners, visiting wineries to source wines and auctioneering for countless benefit auctions. Jamie is an encyclopedia of restaurant knowledge and in his spare time, stays in shape by playing ‘Real Tennis’ (whatever that is) and chasing around his two adorable children, Ella and Archie. He enjoys classic Bordeaux with his bangers and mash and benchmark white Burgundy with his fish and chips.



Who We Are

While we spend most of our time focused on the retail business, we also help out in the auction business, whether it be sourcing wines, inspecting them or helping out in the saleroom. Similarly, our colleagues on the auction side, Serena Sutcliffe MW, Robert Sleigh and Duncan Sterling, who all travel constantly and also taste a lot of wines, help us by using their knowledge, friends and connections to help source and sell our retail wines.
